What this is
Every pillar, cluster and reference page on this site is written to stay out of the way of the sources — see About for how carefully I try to separate documented fact from tradition from my own guesses. This page is deliberately different: it is a personal journal, in the first person, about the experience of building this record — what I learned, what surprised me, what I still don’t know, and why a small piece of it mattered to me.
It is not a source. If something I write here ever conflicts with a claim on a pillar page, trust the pillar page — and tell me, so I can fix whichever one is wrong.
